Violet, consistently belonging to the Violaceae family, nearby, very common in our Europe, it emerges and grows, even in tropical areas and in North, Central and South America. It is said Violet but we mean 400 herbaceous species, annual or perennial, with a height that varies from 10 to 20 cm: all, or almost, bloom in spring, but showing off the most varied colors. Not only that, even the shapes of petals, corollas and calyxes are many different in species and species. It seems a simple plant, therefore, but it knows how to amaze, even for its properties. Let's see how much.

The properties of the Viola

The properties of the Violet, which I admit until not long ago I did not know, are many and interesting even in everyday life: I considered it, while respecting it, a plant indispensable only for the garden, for its flowers and its leaves, by virtue of its wealth and joy they bring to the whole, month after month. Instead the Violet has properties diuretic, laxative, sedative, expectorant and can be used for both gargle and body purification.

This plant is very often considered in the treatments of epidermal disorders, or the lungs and urinary system. It is true that, for now, there is no scientific proof of its effects, but many believe it and use it Violet to get better.

It is not a modern or new age exploit, since ancient times a tea with dried or fresh pansy flowers was not denied to anyone to cure the most varied ailments. Spasms e chest and lung inflammation, first of all, and then also fever and cold. Not in tea but as an ointment or in any case for external use, the Violet it was a good remedy to cure scabs, itching and ulcers and to treat eczema and sweat dermatitis. When it comes to doing good to the skin, it is often associated withnettle.

United to the coltsfoot, on the other hand, this plant has a soothing action in case of lung or respiratory tract problems: it therefore takes one expectorant and anti-inflammatory function and is recommended for bacterial respiratory tract infections and bronchitis. A further field of action of the Violet, together with weed and buchu, finally, are the unpleasant and annoying urinary inflammations.

I support this but I am not the only one: this flower has a excellent effect on mood of those who meet him in gardens and flower beds. An explosion of color in the city has its importance, on my mental health and also, consequently, physical.

Some particular species of Violet, then, they have particular specific uses: the horned, with its large flower, it is often used cut, the odorous one, on the other hand, intuitively has great success in the confectionery industry to produce fresh flowers crystallized in sugar. THE bonbons à la violette are a specialty of city of Toulouse in France, but apart from this gem, the fragrant is used in perfumery and in the production of sweet pecorino: essences and cheese.

Purple: the flower

Most varieties of Violet they are short-lived, or in any case cultivated as annuals or biennials, the parent species come from Europe and Turkey, there are many hybrids and are usually combinations of Viola lutea, tricolor, odorata, cornuta and wittrockiana.

The flower takes on the most varied shapes and colors but they are usually rather medium in size and bright tones. A mix, or single color, choosing between purple, lilac, white, yellow, blue, red, orange. Some varieties also show dark veins that “draw” shapes almost of a human face, on the petals, and every season, as a stylist, nature gives us innovative models, patterns that amaze with new combinations.

In the world there are no varieties that predominate over others, England and France, however, since the nineteenth century have begun to elbow to become the countries that are most dedicated to hybrid production, highly appreciated, for the most varied uses.

Also known as tricolor, the Pansy it is a species up to 15 centimeters high which blooms from June to July even if, when cultivating, they can anticipate a few weeks to follow our comfort. However, it remains annual or at most two years, certainly not perennial.

There Pansy has oval and toothed leaves and flowers that have colors ranging from purple to yellow, it is often and willingly hybridized with lutea and altaica, among the results obtained there is the Swiss giant, which goes from yellow, to white, to orange, to purple, to blue, filling flower beds, vases and containers. Spontaneous in Europe, when you want to cultivate it, you use its seed since it produces many.

Violet violet

Violet violets and Viola odorata they are the same thing, and indicate a 10 cm tall plant that blooms around March, very common throughout Europe where it grows and reproduces spontaneously. The leaves of this type are heart-shaped and the flowers are either purple or lilac, but always very fragrant.

There Viola odorata it is naturally among those used and loved for the production of essences, that too is of Parma, and the lesser known Coeur d’Alsace, Czar, Marie Louise, Princess of Wales. Violets, however, are perennial and reproduce very easily by dividing the stolons, with the risk that it becomes even invasive.

Purple: flowering

These, seen above, and many other species of Violet they bloom in spring and are few, but there are those that stray and produce flowers in summer. Late arrivals. How plants reproduce both sexually, with recombination of characters, both vegetatively, without recombination. The larger flowers, usually positioned higher, are pollinated by insects, the others, smaller and lower, carry out self-pollination.

Viola: how to grow it

It prefers shady locations and a soft, rich, medium-textured, fresh soil but adapts to any type of soil: Violet it is not a difficult flower to grow but we can certainly learn how to do it best by obtaining the most beautiful flowers of the neighbor.

As for the perennial species, they can bloom throughout the winter in mild climate areas, in the coldest climates they should be sheltered under glass instead, in any case they prefer to stay in the shade and in woods, meadows, scree or marshes.

In general it is not a plant that suffers from the cold, the Violet, but it needs abundant watering with the foresight to leave the soil moist but not marshy. Let us also remember fertilize regularly with fertilizer for flowering plants, at least every 20-30 days, with a liquid diluted in water for irrigation that absolutely must have more potassium than nitrogen.

The first in fact helps the flowering and coloring of the petals, the second can lead to an excessive development of the leaves and green parts and sacrifices the flower heads. THE enemies of the Viola they are snails and whiteflies but they can also be attacked by aphids.

Purple: meaning

Such a simple name, also used for the musical instrument and for people, in the case of the flower connected with positive thoughts, sweet memories and a nostalgic past in which to take refuge when the present is clouded by anguish and heaviness.

This interpretation of the flower, all to be verified, could be linked to the fact that in the past the juice extracted from the plant was the "magical" base for love potions or tonic drinks. We find the Violet, that of thought, also in Shakespeare, in her “Hamlet”, among the flowers that Ofelia offers to her brother.

Purple: seeds

If we simply want it in our garden, even without dedicating poetry or making potions of it, we can plant it and cultivate it by purchasing it for 6 euros a pack of 75 seeds of Pansy which will certainly bring color and good humor to the home. In Europe, in almost every corner, the climate is the right one, there is no excuse for not being able to get gaudy results.
